What is Adderall?

Adderall is a medication used to treat the condition of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the condition known as narcolepsy. Adderall includes a mix of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine. Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are both central nervous system stimulants that alter brain chemicals and nerves, which are responsible for the hyperactivity and control of impulses.

Adderall can be used for other purposes not mentioned in this medication guide.

Warnings

Adderall could be a habit-forming drug and is a drug that is used for abuse. Inform your physician whether you’ve had issues with alcohol or drugs.

Stimulants can cause heart attack, stroke and sudden deaths in patients with excessive blood pressure or heart diseases or heart defects.

Do not use this medication when you’ve taken any MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days, like linezolid and isocarboxazid as well as phenelzin rasagiline, selegiline or tranylcypromine, or an injection of methylene blue.

Adderall can trigger the development of a new or worsening form of psychosis (unusual behaviors or thoughts) particularly when you’ve had an past history of mental illness, depression and bipolar disorder.

  • high blood pressure
  • Heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease
  • vascular disease or hardening the arteries
  • an antecedent of a drug or alcohol dependence.

Certain medications can be incompatible with dextroamphetamine or amphetamine and can cause a serious problem known as serotonin syndrome. Discuss with your doctor any other medications you’re with. Make sure that your doctor is aware that you are also taking opioid medication, herbal products or medicines to treat mental illness, depression or Parkinson’s disease. You may also suffer from severe infections, migraines or for the prevention of vomiting and nausea. Consult your physician before making any changes to the way or the frequency of your medication. Signs of serotonin syndrome can include hallucinations, agitation (hearing and seeing objects that aren’t real) and commas, rapid pace of heart, nausea sweating and experiencing muscle stiffness or shaking, seizures, nausea vomiting or diarrhoea. Stop taking Adderall promptly if you are experiencing these signs.

Stimulants can cause an attack on the heart, stroke and sudden death in some individuals. Tell your doctor If you suffer from any of the following:

  • Heart problems 
  • Congenital heart defect;
  • High blood pressure or
  • A familial history of sudden heart attack or death.

To be sure Adderall is suitable for you, inform your doctor if any of your relatives has ever been a victim of:

IR:
Initial Dose 5 mg taken orally 1 or 2 times per day
Maintaining Dose: Daily doses can be increased by 5 mg increments every week at intervals until a satisfactory response is achieved.
Maximum Dose: In the most rare situations will it be necessary to exceed 40 mg every day.

XR:
Patients taking their first treatment, or switching to a different medication:
Initial Dose 20mg taken orally at least once per day

Comments:
-IR: The initial dose should be administered upon the first waking; 1 – 2 extra doses are recommended between 4 and 6 hours.
If possible, the administration of drugs is recommended to be stopped periodically to determine whether continued treatment is necessary.

Use as part of an overall treatment program to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Usual Adult Dose of Adderall for Narcolepsy:

IR:
Initial Dose 10 mg daily in divided doses
Maintaining Dose: Daily doses can be increased by increments of 10 mg at intervals throughout the week until a response that is optimal is achieved.

Comments:
The initial dose is to be administered at the time of awakening. 1 to 2 more doses are recommended between 4 and 6 hours.
The recommended dose is between 5 and 60 mg daily in doses divided, based on the response of each patient.
Dosage should be reduced when adverse reactions that are bothersome (e.g. anorexia, insomnia) are observed.

Use: Treatment for narcolepsy

Usual Pediatric Dose of Adderall for Attention Deficit Disorder:

IR:
Age 3 to 5 Years:
Initial Dosage: 2.5 mg daily orally
Maintenance Dose: The dose can be increased in 2.5 mg increments over weekly intervals until a satisfactory response is achieved.

Age 6 to 17 Years:
Initial Dose 5 mg taken orally 1 or 2 times per day
Maintaining Dose: The daily doses can be increased by 5 mg increments over weekly intervals until the optimal response is achieved.
Maximum Dosage: only in very rare situations will it be necessary to go above 40 mg a day.

XR:
Ages 6-12 Years (starting medication for the first time, or switching to a different medication):
Initial Dose: 5 or 10 mg once per day, in the morning.
Maintaining Dose: The doses can be increased by increments of 5-10 mg at intervals of weekly time.
-Maximum Dose: 30 mg/day

Age 13 to 17 years (starting medication for the first time, or switching to a different medication):
Initial Dose 10 mg, orally at least once per day
Maintenance Dose: The dose can be increased to 20 mg/day following one week of symptoms not being sufficiently managed.
-Maximum Dose: 30 mg/day

Comments:
-IR: The initial dose should be administered upon the moment of awakening. One to two more doses are required between 4 and 6 hours.
If possible, the administration of drugs should be stopped occasionally to determine if a continuation of therapy is necessary.

Maintenance Dose: The doses can be increased by 10 mg increments over intervals over a week until the optimal response is reached.

Comments:
The dosage should first be administered upon awakening. 1 or 2 extra doses should be administered in intervals of 4 to 6 hours.
The usual dosage is between 5 and 60 mg daily in divided doses, based on the response of each patient.
Dosage must be decreased in the event that a number of adverse reactions (e.g. anorexia, insomnia) occur.
The most common cause of narcolepsy is in children less than 12 years old.

Treatment for Narcolepsy: Use

Missed Dose:

Do the missed dose when you can remember it, though not later in the daytime. Do not take your missed dosage if it’s nearing the end of the day. Don’t take any extra medication to make up for the missed dose.

Get medical attention immediately or contact the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. A high dose of Adderall can be fatal.

The symptoms of an overdose can include restlessness, tremors, muscle twitches, fast breathing and hallucinations. Other symptoms include confusion, hallucinations, aggression, panic, weakening or pain, and dark-colored urine. These symptoms could be accompanied by tiredness and depression. Other overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, uneven heartbeats, feeling light-headed, fainting, seizure (convulsions), or coma.

Avoid this:

This medication can affect your ability to think or react. Be aware if you are driving or engage in any activity that requires you to be aware.

Beware of drinking juices made from fruit, as well as taking vitamins C the same time that you are taking Adderall. These substances can make your body take less of the medication.

Interaction with other drugs:

Talk to your doctor prior to together an acid-based stomach medicine (including sodium bicarbonate or Alka-Seltzer). Certain of these medications can modify the way your body is able to absorb Adderall and could improve adverse effects.
